Indiana University (IU) has a long history of embracing internationalization in its School of Education.  When W. W. Internationalization efforts in colleges of education can often be the result of internationalization at the campus level - either in cooporation of or as a directive from a president or provost who understands the importance of the process.  The Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement at the American Council on Education has been supporting campus-wide internationalization efforts for over a decade.  The Center offers an Internationalization Laboratory where campuses are guided through a two year process to help identify an internationalization team, poinpoint current internationalization efforts, and develop a strategic plan.  It also offers an Institute for Leading Internationalization for senior campus leaders responsible for internationalization.Several institutions have taken a campus-wide approach to internationalization.  Miami University in Oxford, Ohio restructured its general education requirements and instituted the “Global Miami Plan” that requires all... read more

Whether these professionals are tenure track or visitors, potential contributions to your campus and community are significant. Leadership and committees play an important role in ensuring that an aptitude for international perspectives is an integral part of any recruitment process.Recruiting Internationally Minded FacultySeeking and hiring teacher educators who have international interests is one way to internationalize a teacher education program. Investing in faculty increases the long-term impact and sustainability of any new academic or programmatic strategy.  Building a globally-oriented faculty requires a multi-pronged approach.  According to a report from NAFSA:  The Association of International Educators, faculty must “own” internationalization efforts and be heavily supported by administrators and policy makers (Green, 2012). It is important to gauge faculty attitudes about internationalization to help ensure buy-in at the college level.  Jennifer Mahon at the University of Nevada, Reno is currently conducting research on faculty and staff attitudes, especially toward overseas student teaching.  More research is needed in this area to support deans interested in embracing internationalization.Bill McDiarmid, Dean of the College of Education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, noted that faculty buy-in is essential to any internationalization effort.  In his presentation at NAFSA's 2013 Colloquium on... read more

Michigan State University is a globally minded campus and has been for a long time. The college's leadership recruit academics, students, and researchers from around the world - a practice that began over forty years ago and grown stronger over the decades. As a result of this commitment, the campus has deeply integrated international perspectives into their teacher preparation program. According to Mary Lynne Calhoun, former Dean of the College of Education at The University of North Carolina, Charlotte, “Professors and students need a road map – a way to get started.”  A College of Education Internationalization Plan, designed and approved by the faculty, provides exactly the kind of roadmap that guides the student experience and faculty development within the college.Emphasis on Global PerspectivesUNC Charlotte has a uniquely successful approach to accomplishing its global perspectives emphasis. It begins before students ever spend a day in the teacher education program. As the flagship of the University system in Maryland, there is a tendency to assume that only big grants and major research projects will help cause new things to happen. In UMD's case, the first grant was just the lever needed to support a major initiative in internationalizing their teacher education programs and to the development of critical infrastructure for realizing widespread internationalization goals.
