Sydney A. Merz is a PhD Candidate, studying international education at George Mason University, USA. She currently teaches education foundations courses and her research interests include intercultural education, international education, social justice education, and preservice teacher education. She has presented her research and scholarship at international and national conferences. She spent four and a half years as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in Armenia and the Philippines serving as an educator and youth organizer. She played pivotal roles in organizing girls’ leadership camps and youth environmental leadership camps in Armenia. In the Philippines, she initiated a partnership with a local village school and her students in which her students provided English literacy lessons to the younger students in the village. She continues her role of enthusing youth through her actions in the university classroom where she teaches aspiring teachers to become advocates for themselves and their future students.
